Can You Imagine A Day Without Water?

Imagine A Day Without Water is coming up on September 15th! This national campaign aims to educate people on the value of water and importance of water infrastructure. The City of Southlake wanted to showcase how valuable water is to us, so staff from multiple departments have shared how water is critical to our jobs here. The first department to share their story is the Southlake Fire Department. After you read their story below, tell us your own! How do you value water?

Ask the Expert: Planting Trees

Many people assume that the fall is not a very good time of year to plant trees because trees start to lose their leaves and go dormant for the winter. But, actually fall is the very best time of year to plant trees and other shrubs! Since Texas has generally mild winter temperatures, tree roots tend to grow year-round and planting trees in the fall gives them a head start in becoming established and prepares them for a new year of growth in the spring. The established root system also helps a newly planted tree cope with the stresses of heat and drought in the summer. So if you are considering planting a new tree in your yard next spring, plant it this fall instead.

Post-Planting Tips
  • Lightly water the tree every day for a week. The second week, water every other day. After the third week, water as needed.
  • Don't fertilize the tree after you plant it - wait until spring for that.
  • Staking the tree is considered a last resort, as you want to encourage the tree's ability to thrive on its own. However, if the trunk is too weak to support itself, use two stakes on opposite sides of the tree, and remove them after a year.

Weekly Watering Advice
This week's recommendation is for you to apply 0.25 inches of water to your lawn. Remember to water only on your designated days, between 6:00pm and 10:00am.  For more information on this, visit Water Is Awesome.
